This week, the Irish government decided to issue a new law requiring a state-licensed pharmaceutical firm to provide medication for erectile dysfunction (ED) patients.
“We are very pleased that we were able to pass this law in this way,” said Dr. Patrick O’Connor, a professor of pharmacy and urology at the University of Dublin.
The law, which took effect in March, was intended to ensure that pharmaceutical manufacturers can market medications in Ireland for all patients. It is designed to allow hospitals and prescribers to sell to patients for more cost-effective treatment.
The Irish government is now investigating the decision and will be required to investigate any alleged illegal promotion of the ED drug sildenafil (Viagra®).
The law requires a pharmaceutical firm to conduct a study on the effectiveness of sildenafil and ensure that the firm can offer services to patients in Ireland.

IMRH asked doctors to “assess whether their patients are being treated for ED.”
“If they are, they should seek the advice of a doctor, who will give them a prescription,” the advisory said.
In April, the IMRH issued a statement urging patients to report the existence of ED or to report their ED to the medical practitioner. The statement noted that patients with erectile dysfunction would be required to report their condition to a doctor.
